Professional Life and Career

In 2000, he got a job as a product tester and copywriter at ‘XDrive,’ a digital storage company that later went bankrupt in 2001. Anderson and DeWolfe, who was a colleague in the company, together founded a direct marketing company, ‘ResponseBase,’ and later sold the company to ‘eUniverse,’ the internet marketing company of Brad Greenspan in 2002.

Anderson developed the social networking site, ‘MySpace,’ with some ‘eUniverse’ employees in August 2003, which later became the first popular internet marketing company.

Together with DeWolfe, they began the first few pages of ‘MySpace’ with the aim of connecting the fans with their favorite bands and music.

By default, Anderson became a friend on ‘MySpace’ to any new ‘Myspace’ user.

It was in the beginning as a competition to ‘Friendster,’ a popular site during that time. In January 2004, ‘MySpace’ was officially launched with DeWolfe as chief executive officer and Anderson as its president.

Later, Anderson founded another internet marketing company, ‘Intermix Media,’ which company was very key in ‘MySpace’ gaining immense popularity. Through it, MySpace become one of the most prominent social networking websites in the US.

‘MySpace’ because of its fewer rules and restrictions as compared to ‘Friendster’ became popular with music bands and fans. This site translated in relatively unknown bands enjoying breakout success, which was instrumental in spreading their music far quicker than the radio or concerts.  Well-known brands as well made their song debuts through this site. The site was so popular that at one point, the web traffic statistics of ‘MySpace’ exceeded those of the most popular search engines like Google.

Anderson sold ‘MySpace’ and ‘Intermix Media’ to Rupert Murdoch’s ‘News Corporation’ for $580 million in 2005, but he was appointed the president of the company. Anderson and DeWolfe moved their headquarters from Santa Monica to Fox Interactive Media Offices in Beverly Hills after the companies were bought by ‘News Corporation,’ s.

‘MySpace’ had 106 million accounts, and around 230K new accounts created daily by the time it was 2006.

As the site became popular, it became a concern to parents, community groups, and government bodies that the youngsters, especially teenagers, were being exposed to potential sex predators.

In a way to address the matter, the company collaborated with ‘Sentinel Tech Holdings Corporation,’ and initiated the first national database of convicted sex offenders. This thus caused it to retain its position as the most popular networking site.

Even with continued effort to add new features on ‘MySpace’ and an alliance with video sharing sites such as ‘YouTube,’ ‘Facebook,’ grew in 2008, which resulted in a sharp decline in ‘MySpace’ membership.

The site tried to re-establish as a music site in 2009 but could not match with the competition brought by Facebook and was thus sold by ‘News Corporation’ to ‘Specific Media’ for $35 million Later in 2011.

Anderson was replaced as the president In April 2009 and, thus, from 2010, could no longer be the default friend on ‘MySpace.’
