Professional Life and Career
Before turning into a professional boxer, Ray was made a stockholder in the Sugar Ray Leonard, Inc. his debut in professional boxing was in February 1977 against Luis The Bull Vega. Ray emerged the winner through a unanimous decision.
Ray was unstoppable, and in 1978, he defeated Floyd Mayweather, who was ranked seventeenth. He went on and became the NABF Welterweight Champion in 1979. This was after he defeated Pete Ranzany. He defended the title against Dave Boy Green.
All was not a smooth ride for Ray, and he suffered a defeat in 1980 in The Brawl in Montreal. Roberto Duran defeated him in what was termed as a very tight match. In their rematch, Ray made Duran quit, and he was declared the winner. Leonard defended his championship in 1981 with a victory against Larry Bonds.
In 1982, he defended his title against Bruce Finch. That same year, Ray announced his retirement. He stayed out of the ring for only one year and made a comeback in 1983. He suffered his first knockdown in 1984. He was knocked down by Kevin Howard. The following year, Ray became the WBC Super Middleweight Champion. He officially retired from professional boxing in 1998, with a career record of 36-3-1.
