Professional Life and Career
Oscar De La Hoya’s first Olympics was in 1992. Although his mother died in 1990, she always dreamt of seeing him become a gold medallist. His mother’s dream became his inspiration, and shortly after his graduation from high school, he fulfilled his mother’s dream by becoming a gold medallist. This gave him his current nickname, “The Golden Boy.”
Oscar’s first world title was the WBO super featherweight title. In January 1997, he successfully defended his junior university title. In April 1997, Oscar became the winner of world weight WorldBC title after he defeated the 1984 Olympic gold medallist (Pernell’ Sweet Pea ‘Whittaker). He continued as the world weight champion until September 18, 1999.
He has won many titles and has fought against great champions. Some of these include; Felix Trinidad, Arturo Gatti, Javier Castillejo, and Sugar Ray Leonard, among many others. He took a break from boxing for two years to take care of personal matters, including his family. He came back with a bang and won several more titles until he retired on 14th April 2009.
