The professional career of Novak kicked off when he was 14 years old. He won a silver medal in a team competition for Yugoslavia in the World Junior Championship in 2001. By the time he was 16, he had won five ITF tournaments, and he ranked in the 40th position in the best junior players in the world.

Novak won his first ATP Challenge tournament in 2004 in Budapest, where he had started as a qualifier. In the 2007 season, Novak played the French Open and the Wimbledon semi-finals. He defeated three top players, namely; Roger Federer, Andy Roddick, and Rafael Nadal. His winning saw him get to position 3 in the world.
