Nick’s surfing trips to Indonesia and Australia were the inspiration behind the founding of GoPro. During these trips, Nick noticed the difficulties that photographers were going through in producing quality photographs as a result of being far from the action or due to the lack of affordable quality equipment. To resolve this, Nick thought of developing a belt that would attach the camera to the body. To be able to finance this venture, Nick borrowed $200,000 from his father as his initial ventures in two start-ups failed.
A 35mm film camera was the first product of GoPro, which was developed by Hotax, a Chinese company which in cooperated with Woodman’s custom wrist strap. From this beginning, the product has evolved into a compact digital camera supporting Wi-Fi, recording to a micro SD card with waterproof housing, and with the capabilities of being controlled remotely. 2014 saw a Japanese company ordering 100 cameras at a sports show.
