Professional Life and Career
In 1986, he was appointed as a lecturer in astronomy at the University of Maryland, where he lectured till 1987 and was accepted into Columbia University the following year. He was awarded a Doctorate of Philosophy in astrophysics after two years of intense research in 1991.
In the 1990s, he began writing and started with the column, ‘Universe,’ for the ‘Natural History’ magazine in 1995. The write up went on to become very popular and was released as a special edition titled ‘City of Stars’ (2002.
In 2001, he was appointed as a member of the 12-member commission to study the Future of the US Aerospace Industry by US President George Bush.
In 2004, he was once again appointed to serve on a 9-member commission to the Implementation of the United States Space Exploration Policy.
He, together with Donald Goldsmith, authored ‘Origins: Fourteen Billion Years of Cosmic Evolution.’
He collaborated with Donald Goldsmith again in 2009 as the narrator on the documentary ‘400 Years of the Telescope’ which premiered on PBS.
Presently he serves as the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the Rose Center for Earth and Space.
