Professional Life and Career
He started his career playing drums after being honorably discharged from the US Navy. It was during this time that he formed ‘Holy Ghost Boys,’ a Christian rap music group with Jon Gibson.
In 1987, Hammer released an album that sold over 60,000 copies. In 1988, he earned a multi-album deal with the ‘Capitol Records’ through his album and one of his live acts.
He traveled around promoting the album and installed a recording studio for recording songs at the back of this tour bus.
On February 12, 1990, he released another album, ‘Please, Hammer, Don’t Hurt ‘Em.’ The single, ‘U Can’t Touch This,’ was massively received and had was diversely covered.
Though successful, the album faced a lot of criticism as there were claims if repetitive lyrics of other musicians.
In 1991, he released ‘Too Legit to Quit,’ which sold over 5 million copies and was in Top 5 on the ‘Billboard 200.’ The title track of this album was the most popular number. After spending so large amounts of money in a way to promote this album and realizing that the album’s sales were not sufficient to finance it, Hammer canceled the tour midway.
In 1994, he released another album, ‘The Funky Head hunter,’ through the ‘Giant Records’ label.
His next productions included ‘V Inside Out’ (1995) and ‘Too Tight’ (1996) ‘Greatest Hits’ (1996) and ‘Back 2 Back’ (1998). In 1998, he released a ‘Gospel’ based music album, ‘Family Affair,’ which included ‘Set Me Free,’ ‘Our God,’ ‘Never without You,’ among others.
In 2001 he released, ‘Active Duty,’ which was followed with ‘Full Blast,’ but both these albums did not have any charting singles.
In 2006, ‘Look Look Look’ was released and sold 300,000 copies. After 2010, He released a few more singles.
He also was a part of many TV shows and films.
After spending so much through lavish lifestyles and stage shows, he filed for bankruptcy in 1996.
He returned to faith in 1997and became a preacher with a Christian Ministry TV show.
