Jacob started his career as a banker in the family bank known as N M Rothschild & Sons, which is located in London in 1963. However, in 1980, he resigned after experiencing a tough family dispute. He immediately took full control of Rothschild Investment Trust, which is now known as RIT Capital Partners PLC. This is an investment trust which is listed on the London Stock Exchange. Jacob serves there as the current Chairman.

Jacob is also serving at J Rothschild Capital Management as the Chairman. After he resigned from the family bank in 1980, he founded J. Rothschild Assurance Group along with Sir Mark Weinberg (the company is now known as St. James Place) in 1991.

In 2006, Xander Real Estate (India) named Jacob Rothschild an Advisory Board Member and a Founder. He is also a member of many other institutions, some of which include; BSkyB Corporation (where he was the Deputy Chairman from 2003 to 2008), Council for the Duchy of Cornwall for HRH The Prince of Wales, International Advisory Board of The Blackstone Group.
