Gary entered into politics in 1994, and he ran for the governor’s position. His slogan was People Before Politics, and he emphasized on improving law and order, tax cuts, creating jobs, and improving education. His strategy worked perfectly, and he won the race emphatically. He was re-elected in 1998, becoming the first governor to be elected for two terms.
The changes Gary made in the education system were a hallmark for his second term. His role and commitment during the Cerro Grande fire that devastated New Mexico in 2002 were extensively lauded.
