Don King was born on the 20th of August 1931 in Cleveland, Ohio, the U.S, to his parents Clarence King and Hattie King. Don went to John Adams High, where he graduated in 1951. He later joined the Kent State University but would not live to see graduation as he quit. After leaving university, Don started running an illegal bookmaking operation from the basement of a record store on Kinsman Road.
It was after school that he had 2 cases separate in 13 years, one of shooting a man on the back and the other of fatally striking an employee to death due to the money the employee owed him. He was jailed, and after four years in jail, he was pardoned. He says that while in prison, he read everything that could be read.
