Dale began his racing career at the age of 17 with his father, competing in the Street Stock division at Concord, North Carolina’s Motorsport Park. In 1979, he had his first race car at Monte Carlo. By the time he was reaching age 19 after two seasons of driving Street Stock division, Dale had improved his abilities to the level of joining the Late Model Stock Car Division.
As time went by, he developed an in-depth knowledge of chassis setup and car preparation while racing against his siblings. In 2000, it was Dale’s breakout year in the cup series, where he competed for the Raybestos NASCAR Rookie of the year Award In 2000. Furthermore, Dale played a part in recreating one Winston Cup milestone in 2000 when he competed with his father and half-brother Kerry in the Pepsi 400 at Michigan International Speedway.
