He started working as an investigative reporter for ‘The Tennessean,’ as he studied law and philosophy at Vanderbilt University.
After being a journalist for some time, he made a decision to become an attorney. He, however, soon quit law school and decided to run for a seat in the US House of Representatives.
He won the election to the US House of Representatives In 1976.
He was against federal funding of abortion, which was voted in favor of a bill supporting a moment of silence in schools, and also voted against a ban on interstate sales of guns.
